Cyber Security Awareness Month 2024: How to increase your cyber resiliency

It’s October, and as we enter the season of ghost stories and goblins, it’s fitting we’re also being reminded to beware of threat actors trying to disrupt our lives with nefarious cybercrimes. Lucky for us, we have a way to protect our data with some proven best practices.

We have the good fortune of working with many clients in the IT/Managed Service Provider (MSP) and cybersecurity space, including our own MSP that supports our business: RedDoor. We admire their commitment to educating and bringing awareness to the many cyber threats organisations can face. Case in point: RedDoor’s latest blog details how they’ll be supporting Cyber Security Awareness Month 2024 and shares best practices for increasing your cyber resilience. We have incorporated many of their suggestions into our day-to-day operations.

Here’s a quick look at what we’ve made part of our company policy:

Two-factor authentication. This step has proven to be one of the very best ways we can protect our data from a breach. Here’s why: it’s an added layer of security before we can access the network. This is particularly helpful when working remotely from a public place like a coffee shop, an airport, or a train where internet passwords can be easily stolen.

Strict remote access policies. The cloud is central to how we work and for keeping information accessible from anywhere. It’s also extremely vulnerable to bad actor threats, which makes it essential to update security policies. Implementing a strict remote access policy saves our organisation from potential catastrophic threats (e.g., malware attacks) and long periods of downtime.

Support for IT. When we receive an urgent email alert from Reddoor, we don’t ignore it. We immediately do what they ask to protect and secure our company’s data.  And if they ask us to take some steps to back up certain files or participate in ethical hacking (pen) tests to assess security vulnerabilities, we help them out and do whatever is necessary to keep data safe.

We recognise the need for tighter cyber-security measures that can help us avoid disruption while protecting valuable business data. Security isn’t top of mind for many of us, but it needs to be. Like it or not, we’re at higher risk of a security breach than ever. We can help you understand why it’s important to strengthen your security posture and make cyber resiliency a priority.
