When crisis hits, what’s a leader’s first move?

It’s business 101 to know that crisis will come at some point, it’s never a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Planning for a crisis is just a smart business practice. Yet, it’s often shelved and not treated as a top priority. In this new blog series, we’re going to show you how to navigate crisis and strengthen your organisational resiliency.

What is a business crisis?

Every organisation has their own idea of what signifies a crisis. To some companies, crisis doesn’t even register unless it’s extreme, for example, a giant oil spill or a mechanical failure of an aircraft. To small-mid-size companies, crisis doesn’t have to be extreme, e.g., redundancies or a cybersecurity breach to negatively impact brand reputation.) With that in mind, it’s important to think through all the events that could bring crisis to your doorstep. And think big, from relatively minor to outlandish to outright catastrophic, nothing is off the table when you’re preparing your crisis plans.

What’s the first thing to do when your company is in a crisis?

Gather the expertise both inside and outside your organisation that can put a communications plan into motion quickly. The faster you respond to a crisis, the more chance you have to protect your brand reputation. Prepare an FAQ document as quickly as possible and be transparent with all the information you know in the early moments of communicating with employees, investors, customers, and the public. You don’t have to do this alone. Call on the experts that can help you get through all the stages of a crisis.
