Protecting mental health during a crisis

Crisis communications can be very challenging, and it can take an enormous emotional toll on the people doing the work. When you’re managing a brand in crisis or dealing with a misinformation campaign, the pressure can be relentless. Therefore, it is important to consider the following points when managing communications during a crisis.

How to spot burnout. Communication professionals are on the front lines, and that means their wellbeing could be impacted. Stress doesn’t always show up with a neon sign. It can look like irritability, fatigue, indecision, or withdrawal. Learn to recognise the early warning signs and check in with your team often. Crisis mode is all-consuming, but it shouldn’t mean ignoring how your team might be experiencing it.

Be supportive in all scenarios not just when you’re in crisis mode. Create a culture where it’s okay to speak up and ask for help. Encourage peer support, offer mental health resources, and make a focus on wellbeing a priority for your team.

Lead with empathy. Think about how your team managed through the experience. What support worked? What was missing? A comprehensive post-crisis review can help focus your attention on ways to better protect your team’s wellbeing the next time you’re facing a crisis.
